STUDENT VOICES

-- Lane Towery, Duke University - Fall 2007

"A dynamic approach to study abroad. Students do more than take classes. They get the opportunity to compare and contrast between the different regions of Ecuador, and they have the opportunity to get involved in programs and projects that help to develop a better understanding of Ecuadorian culture and society."

– Sarah Ganley, Smith College - Fall 2007

"More than the academics, this program enabled me to learn things that I would never have learned at Duke. In a sense, it was a different kind of academics, I learned a language, how to communicate with others in this language, I learned about a different culture, and lived with a family and gained valuable memories and was profoundly affected."

Postcard from Abroad

Dear Global Education Office:

Ecuador was a wonderful, life-changing experience.

Everyone in the program was required to take the CORE course. Each section of the class focused on a different region of the country, and after each section, we went on a weekend trip to that region. That was absolutely amazing to go from reading the name of a city on paper to seeing it an person, and actually getting to live among the people and learn about their culture first hand. This takes the meaning of "applied learning" to a new level.

Ecuador is such a beautiful, diverse country both in climate and culturally. There is the jungle, the beach, and the mountains. The best part is that when we weren't travelling with the program we got to explore the county on our own. I did things I never thought I would ever do on this trip--climb a mountain, zip-line, swim with sharks in the Galapagos Islands, participate in an indigenous celebration, do a bike ride through the mountains...the list goes on and on.

Living with a host-family was also an irreplaceable element of the program. It gives students an even deeper level of immersion in the language and culture. It's also nice to have that home-cooked meal and host mom's hug when you're missing home!

If you are serious about learning another culture and a new language and having the best time of your life while doing it, then this is the program for you.

Ecuador has a place in my heart forever and it has changed me for the better in so many ways. I know I will definitely go back someday.
