Duke in Russia: Language and Culture Program

The Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies and the Global Education Office for Undergraduates of Duke University offer an intensive language and culture study program at St. Petersburg University in St. Petersburg, Russia. The program is directed by Professor Edna Andrews of the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies of Duke University.
St. Petersburg, located near the Gulf of Finland, is the second largest Russian city. Some of the most outstanding features of St. Petersburg are its beautiful palaces and churches and the "White Nights”, which peak at the end of June.
Engaging Duke in Russia: Hybrid Program
End of June – End of July
This program features feature an additional 4-week Duke Engage component following the end of the six-week study abroad program, in St. Petersburg. Duke students who are enrolled in the "Duke in Russia" program are eligible to extend their stay in St. Petersburg to participate in a 4-week Duke Engage experience (participation in the study abroad program beforehand is required).
DukeEngage students rotate in two host organizations: the Russian Ministry of Health, Pokrovskaya Hospital where students provide supervised support in different units; the Russian Society of the Blind, where students help local sight-impaired persons at the center itself and in their homes with a variety of everyday activities, including shopping, reading aloud, organizing space, and providing other social service assistance. A new component may include a St. Petersburg orphanage.
Students wishing to apply to the Engaging Duke in Russia Hybrid summer program need to apply to both Duke Engage and the Global Education Office by January 14, 2010 (Note: this deadline is earlier than the regular study abroad program deadline.)
